Chapter Nine
His hand was about to cup her breast when he stilled its movement and slowly drew his mouth from hers. He lingered, just barely touching her lips with his. Every ounce of his body was on fire. It would be so easy to let their adventure continue. But he couldn’t. Though they were far from the sight of the others, he couldn’t be sure someone wouldn’t wander by.
Sister Amata’s words grew louder in his mind. “I’m holding you responsible and accountable.” John let his forehead press against Dani’s.
Her fingers slipped from his hair and ran down his arm to rest at his elbow. He lifted his face a fraction and opening his lids, watched hers flutter before they opened. His thumb came up to caress her cheek as they looked at one another. There was so much he wanted to say. But couldn’t. His lips touched the tip of her nose before he twisted his body from hers.
John grabbed the jar of cider, needing something to occupy his hands and mind. She rose to a sitting position beside him as he removed the lid. He took a swallow before handing the jar to her.
She took a drink and handed the cider back. He raised the jar to his lips again.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” she whispered.
The cool cider felt like molten lava against his throat. He coughed and spewed the contents from his mouth. Tell her what? That he was in love with her? That Sister Amata was haunting him? That he was hornier than on old bull? His coughing spasm grew.
“John, John?” Her hand pounded against his back.
“S-sorry, must have gone down the wrong hole,” John answered once he caught his breath.
She took the jar from his hand, replaced the lid and set it on the ground. “Why didn’t you tell me how much you liked my cup cakes?”
John turned to stare at her. “Your cup cakes?’ Did she ever think of anything besides cooking? Or was she referring to, to her breasts? His fingers tingled.
“Yes, my cup cakes. I met Nancy Wilson today, and she’s now baking and selling cup cakes at her bakery because of the way you bragged about the ones I make.” Dani pulled her eyes from his to look toward the people milling below them. “You should’ve told me. I would’ve made some for today.”
John couldn’t help the laugh that began deep in his belly. Relief allowed it to roll upwards and burst from his mouth.
She turned to him. “What? What’s so funny?”
“N-nothing. Y-you,” he sputtered between guffaws, “do you ever think of anything besides cooking?”
Her chin dropped. “Well, of course I do.”
John lifted an eyebrow in question.
A smile grew on her face. “Once in awhile.” Her light giggle boasted one of those cute, little snorts as it joined his deeper laugh.
The mirth quickly relieved the pressure in the air their kissing had installed. John used the back of his hand to wipe the left over cider from his chin. “Yes, I like your cup cakes very much.
